Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression of E-cadherin of oral squamous cell carcinomas, the downregulation of which has been known to play a role in the ivasion and metastasis of cancers, and further to clarify the role of E-cadherin In the invasion and metastasis in oral squamous cell carcinonmas. Five normal oral epithelium and 55 oral squamous cell carcinolmas were processed for the immunohistochemistry using monoclonal antibody E-caadherin 5H9. The following results were obtained.
1. while basal cell layer of the normal oral epithelium showed diffuse cytoplasmic staining and suprabasal cells did strong circumferential stainability, the supertical layer did very weak stainability.
2. Well and moderately diffrrentiated carcinomas showed stronger stainability than poorly differentiated squauous cell carcinomas.
3. E-cadherin expression in the invasive front of oral squamous cell carcinomas showed stronger that in their central portion
4. E-cadherin expression in metastatic tumor was relatively lower than in non-metastasizing tumors.
5. From the above results, it was suggested that the loss of E-cadherin may be related with the invasiveness of oral squamous cell carcinomas.
